A repair can have OEM thickness if it was it was taken down to metal and paint was blended. If you don't really understand paint, it won't be of much use since thicknesses can vary by manufacturer (within a few mm).

I've never seen anyone use one outside of a collision shop. There's no way to tell how much clear you have until you've burned through. it doesn't measure clearcoat specifically. because it measures the total amount of material on top of the metal. My train of thought was that if I bought the Gauge it would just give me piece of mind.īecs, your old R probably had a few hundred microns of wax and other shiny products on top of the original paint.Nope. Thank you Bec, that’s the link I was after, had seen it some while ago but I couldn’t find it 👍Īppreciate your comments, and your right accidents happen and I definitely won’t be “writing off” (excuse the pun) a car that has a potential respray. Am looking at around a 2019 and hopefully sub 10,000 miles one owner 🤙 Thank you golf7.5r all valid points and appreciate your input. And remember VW oem paint has orange peel, it’s inconsistencies in it to look for amongst other things. Sure there can be some substandard paint jobs so look carefully but don’t just judge by paint thickness alone. So respray isn’t always an indication that the car is no good, in some cases it’s an indication that a car has received great care and attention following unfortunate incidents not of the owners control. I sold it privately in March and the owner was fully aware of the work done on it. Each time it was repaired to a very high standard by a good bodyshop. My own mk7R had panels resprayed following a hit and run smash, plus a couple others after getting dinged by careless parkers. One thing I would say is don’t write a car off just because it might have had a respray. This states it can be between 67 and 198 microns and suggests anything over the latter may have been resprayed. I think you can check the number of launches carried out, which might give you a feel for how it has been treated.Īnother tell tale for me is cheap and/or mixed tyres - shouts "probably skimped on other things" to me.īeg, borrow or steal a copy of vcds as that will tell you a lot more than a paint gauge. Look for cars that have had a proper haldex service and oil changes of no more than 10k miles.Ī 2 year old 7.5 may only have 1 service stamp (not that you get stamps nowadays, so look for documentation, invoices etc.). The phrase "full manufacturers service history" means very little these days with longlife servicing, especially on performance cars. I personally would be more concerned about the quality and consistency of the servicing, and how the previous owner drove it. A lot of cars have the front and rear bumpers redone at some point in their lives. If it's a bad job then you will be able to tell by sight (slightly different shade, orange peel, overspray etc.). There are bigger things to worry about than paint thickness when buying a used car imo. Think I’m right but will gladly be corrected. Have been Googling the depth of paint and if I’ve read right it can range from around 90microns-170microns, but If a panel has been sprayed by human hand it’s can range from 250+ microns. Was only hoping to spend around£60, but I may need to increase that budget.

Regards paint oem paint thickness of a 7.5 it might be worth you asking some pro detailing companies that question. Probably going to get one myself later this year for pre machine polishing checks. Might be worth a read of recommendations on Detailing World.Īnother useful thread regards where to check etc. Hope I’ve explained my self properly but I’m trying to avoid getting caught out again, with cars being resprayed. My knowledge is nil with them and I only intend to use it when viewing a car so not for any paint correction work.ĭue to this I don’t want to spend “silly money” on something that’ll probably only ever get used the once.Ĭould anyone advise on a make/model “reliable” gauge that I could purchase off Amazon or similar?Īlso does anyone know the average depth of paint for the MK7.5 Golf R, and what I should be looking at I’m trying to minimise that mistake and thought that a paint gauge would help. Reason being, many years ago I bought a BM and it wasn’t until 8 months after purchasing the car I discovered by coincidence that some panels had been resprayed. I’m considering purchasing a Paint Thickness Gauge to take with me on inspection of any potential purchase. Hi everyone, As it’s getting closer to me making a purchase of a 7.5 R.
